Aphasia Short - Coming Soon
When my dad was 55, he suffered a stroke that deeply affected his speech, language, and physical abilities. The difficulties he faced afterward were due to aphasia, a condition that disrupts communication but not intelligence.
My dad has always been a poet and a wordsmith — he even holds a doctorate in English. After the stroke, he found that while his mind remained sharp and his ability to write was intact, he struggled with speaking and typing. Despite these challenges, he has continued to dedicate himself fully to poetry. He is now preparing to publish a new book, After a Short Illness, a collection of poems that reflect on his experiences living with aphasia.
Reading his poems, I was so moved that I wanted to bring them to life in another form. I began developing them into a narrative and script for an animated short film.
Over the past five years, I’ve been teaching myself animation, combining it with my lifelong passion for art and storytelling. This film is the result of patience, discipline, and love — a project I am creating entirely on my own, from character design to animation.
With a style influenced by Pixar and Studio Ghibli, the film blends warmth, surreal imagery, and heartfelt storytelling to give his poetry a new dimension. It is both a personal tribute to my father and a universal reflection on communication, resilience, and the beauty of finding meaning beyond words.
A few stills from the film are shared below — with more updates on the way.
